5 Generations, 1 Family

Originally founded in 1866, Jamies Jewellers is a 5th generation family owned and operated New Zealand jewellery store with 150 years of expertise, knowledge and reputation. We offer a selection of exciting local and international jewellery and watch brands as well as a wide range of fine diamonds & jewellery. The name ‘Jamie’ originates from the Scottish isles and is actually the surname of founder John Jamie (the 1st).

1860s - 1940s

John Jamie (the 1st), a watchmaker from Scotland, establishes the business, which was based in several towns throughout the southern gold rush.

Both the profession and the name were continued by the ‘John Jamies’ (2nd and 3rd) until the conclusion of the Second World War when things began to change.

1940s - 1980

Joyce Jamie (wife of John 3rd) became involved in the business bringing with her a strong sense of style and ambition.

Along with her husband, they transformed Jamies into a full service jewellery business, importer of gems, jewellery and fine china; solidifying its reputation as the premium jeweller in Central Otago.

1980s - 2013

In the late 1970s their daughter Paula Lovering (nee Jamie) returned from overseas to ensure the family legacy continued.

Paula bolstered the business through modernisation and expertise, becoming a fully qualified gemologist (FGA), jewellery valuer and one of New Zealand’s most respected diamond graders. Paula remains a critical partner in the business today.

2014 - Current

Rachel Vellacott (nee Lovering) has inherited the family passion for jewellery. She has an in-depth knowledge of the jewellery business through her involvement in Jamies and her position as Co-ordinator for Merchandise & Marketing for Nationwide Jewellers based out of Sydney.

Emigrating to London in 2001, Rachel diversified from diamonds to digital. Partnering with her husband Clyde, they co-owned and operated a digital design agency specialising in all things online including website strategy and e-commerce.

In 2013 Rachel and Clyde returned to Central Otago with their two Miniature Dachshunds (Slinky and Herbie) to formally take over the family profession!.
